My Bleep 36 is better than your Bleep 36.

I've got a whole whack-load of vinyl sitting here that's arrived in the mail in the last 2-3 weeks and most of it is stuff I haven't even touched because of all those tech-house sets I've been doing lately. Well this mix was a short break from the easy-going accomodating music. This set is rough and tough. It's the kid who pushed you down in school. It's guy who knocked out your tail-light in the parking lot and left no note. It's got street cred for dubious past actions.

it's Bleep 36!

Another Bleep Show/Mix tucked under the belt and archived for anyone who being a sissy and sleeping while it aired. The irony is thick here...

I had two Fun in the Murkiers hook me up with Guest Mixes for Bleep 37. First of all we have The Moose himself, or as his parents know him "Anders Olovsson" of Sweden. Bringing up the rear is one of the Maltese massive. A young lad by the name of Cain who is a resident Wonky Dj for one of the myriad of Maltese Techno Promoters.

Anders' mix is a lot like my own, lots of variety, constant changes in mood and attitude and a clear like of cleavage (ok I had to do some interpreting for the last bit).

Cain's on the other hand is a handful of his favorite tunes. Some stuff followed by Neil landstrumm, some more stuff, some more neil Landstrumm. Wicked.

Aired: August 24th, 2006
Mixed by: Paul Birken

This was a non-traditional mix. It was all done with gear and record loops, samples and effected bits. Read on for details from Paul...

Music bits:
An hour's worth of cuts and reworks, effects and weird scratches by artists like Frankie Bones, Joey Beltram, Adam Beyer, Andrei Morant, Dj ESP, Tony Rohr, Dj Sneak (oldschool!!), Dj HMC, Nigel Richards, Dj Rush, Christian Morganstern, Mika, Bob Brown, Terry Mullan, Angel Alanis, Dietrich Schoenenman, Dj Urban, and myself (Paul Birken).

Tech bits:
Acid 3.0 (final mixdown was 855 tracks! - unlike Ableton which I use now, each snippet in Acid required it's own track...damn damn)
Tuareg 1.5
Soundforge 5 bunch o' plugs
wavesurgeon 2.56

How it happened bits:
Lots of pieces dumped and loaded on the MPC2000xl like I'd do for a liveset.. cut up, filtered, run off through the patch bay into effects, crossfaded and recorded back in.

mix slows from 138 bpm to 105 bpm and then goes back up to around 135 somewhere in the middle...mostly done as an experiment learning smooth tempo changes in the program.

Machines....shut down...think about it

For the most part I've always included as much info as can be expected (plus more!) with each show. Now there's no more dilly dallying. Each show's mix will be as complete as I can make it and I'll even take the time to write up little comments for each track. I like the idea of commenting about each track. Not one long continuous narration, but whatever little nuggets of info, personal feelings or suggestions to something similiar I can come up with as the show is playing. It might be hated and ignored. it might be loved and read. I'll settle for enjoyed and skimmed over.

Enjoy the show folks!

Aired: October 19th, 2006 @ 7pm EST on www.livesets.com
Mixed by: Trevor Wilkes

Running Time: 66:32
File: 121 Megs @ 256kb/s

Playlist:

01 - Millbrook Experiments
Some creepy sample of a child talking about how life altering taking Acid can be. Found in a video on youtube and sampled one sunday morning.

02 - S-max "Braincell Harvester" Boogizm 008 [I Love My Camouflaged Consumerizm EP 2004]
S-max is one of the odd folks behind Boogizm. Boogizm is a glitched out, bass funked, Max msp and quirky rhythm toting 'Minimal Techno' label that actually keeps it interesting unlike some other labels I could mention.
Discog's link w/ more information...

03 - Chris Duckenfield "Modern House Is Rubbish" Odori 35 [Duckbeats 2 EP 2006]
Chris Duckenfield's earlier output on Primitive is what led me to him. I think pretty much anything he touches is gold and what defines his particular musical niche. Also very versatile, his releases can be played with virtually anything and it always seems to work. I don't question it. I only buy it.
Discog's link w/ more information...

04 - S-max "Sweet Antidote" Boogizm 004 [Bingo Bubble Burner EP 2002]
Some more S-max. I was on a boogizm hunt while recording this set. Digging for all my Boog Eps, but only found a few. The shelves be cluttered.
Discog's link w/ more information...

05 - Stewart Walker "Star Machine" Mosquito 012 [Artififical Music For Artificial People EP 1998]
One of Stewart's earlier Eps. Back when he was still doing tracky, bleepy numbers. It was soon after this he started into his 'musical' side of things. Read: boring. Although he did do good stuff after wards I will always love this EP and the Matrix ones just a little bit more.
Discog's link w/ more information...

06 - Tok Tok "Standard F" Tresor 64 [Tresor 5 LP 1997]
A minimalish, key stabby slow burner. Taken from a great Comp on Tresor. It had loads of Brighton and Detroit crossover stuff on it, which I guess you can say this track fits in with.
Discog's link w/ more information...

07 - No Brand Just Music 01 [2006]
I have no idea what this is. it says "No Brand Just Music" on it and that's all. It's borderline too "floaty" for my likeing, but has enough jack to it to hold my interest. Would be nice knowing who made the darn thing though.

08 - Unknown "Bulb Exposure" Has Been 01 [2006]
Again, no real info for this release. The track name and label are printed on it, but no lue as to who did it or what. Sounds like it might be a mishmash of samples as I recognize bits of it, but that could be my over active imgaination. Whatever it is...this record ROCKS. A & B sides are both killer tunes.

09 - Rotorik "(To Ride) Streethawk" Crime Productions 003 [America's Most Wanted EP 2004]
Rotorik has his own style. Hard to describe, but if you hear a few of his Eps you pick up on it quick. It's probably just a matter of him knowing what the hell he's doing as opposed to the rest of us pretending. Naturally Crime is Mark Hawkins' label. Now defunct as he tries to figure out where he's heading with it all.
Discog's link w/ more information...

10 - Paul Birken "Sufferflex" Framework Music 16 [We Pledge Allegiance EP 2003]
I'm pretty sure that's what this song is. (Paul...confirm??). I only have the white label which was given to me by Bob Brown when I made him roller skate all the way to Toronto in 2003 for a gig no one showed up at! Killer tune...has the signature Birken badassness to it.
Discog's link w/ more information...

11 - Dr. Nowhere Vs. The Maverick Dj "Cabbbage Rock" Scandinavia NYC 009 [The Automated Leisure EP 1998]
This record is actually Si Begg lending a hand to Neil. Giving him some tweaked out acid lines and shuffled beats for his Scandinavian reign of terror. Quirky. Full of simple loops that are well timed. Quite catchy in the end.
Discog's link w/ more information...

12 - Unknown "Untitled" Primitive 04 [Primitive Urges Volume 2 EP 1997]
Unknown artist...but I smell Chris Duckenfield at it again. This whole label wrecks people. Each release is Solid and can be just as rewarding in a club or at home on the hi-fi.
Discog's link w/ more information...

13 - User "Side A" User 1A [1A EP 1998]
Huh? What? I can't hear you over the Todd Terry samples...Ok, yeah. he did it to no end, but the first few User's were tight. Simple rhythm tracks of a Millsy nature that just don't seem to age. Whether that's User's influence or Todd Terry's I don't know.
Discog's link w/ more information...

14 - CLS "Can You Feel It (In House Dub)" 541 [Serious Beats 2 EP 2006]
had to back the user up with a Todd Terry...had to! I think most everyone recognizes this tune. The hoover's suck your face off if it's loud enough. Best listened to at night, in a dark room full of 2000 of your best friends. Should be sweat dripping from the ceiling too.
Discog's link w/ more information...

15 - The Manimals "Manimal In The House" Growth Recordings 003 [Remedies For Nervous Disorders and Healing EP 2006]
1 track off of Lief Ryan's Growth label based in the UK. The Manimals are Cristian Vogel, Dave Tarrida and Tobias Schmidt and before you ask...yes it's insane. Judging from this and the other solo Eps coming out soon from these guys their styles have switched up a bit and I definitely approve of the direction.
Discog's link w/ more information...

16 - S-max "Shaolin Onik Oink" Boogizm 006 Shaolin Toothpaste EP 2002]
Boogi, boogi boo!
Discog's link w/ more information...

17 - Neil Landstrumm "We Are Pleased To Serve You" Tresor 174 [Compilation Volume 9 LP 2001]
This, I think, is one of my favorite Landstrumm tracks. Maybe up there in the top 5. Great tune, it's so different than anything else people call Techno. Very refreshing and I found out a few times it's not a good track to end with because apparently some people don't like to mix into it. bah.

I'm not incredibly happy with this mix. I was supposed to have a guest mix, but didn't get it in time. So this one was rushed into being last night before bed. bad time (apparently) to put an hour together. It has the variety I like, but I feel the flow is a bit off. The loosey goosey mixes aren't high on my list of things liked either. That's life.

Tracklist

01 - Vladislav Delay "Second" Force Inc 200 [met@music 3LP / 2000]
I'm not a fan of Vladislav, not one bit. In fact I think this is the only track of his I even own. I have this one because of the fantastic compilation it's on. Met@music is chock full of great tracks - including this one by Delay that I like more than his other stuff. I think my favorite on the Compilation is a Sutekh track called "Short Change". It's got the funk.

02 - Brian Aneurysm "The End Of Logic (Carsten Feitz &Tobias Schmitt Remix)" Iron Box Music 17.5 [The End Of Logic Remixes / 2006]
I bought this record because of a typo in it's description. it said Tobias Schmidt where I bought it..Lured into listening via a typo and snagged by a decent chunky minimal track with some "Beverly Hills Cop Snares" as I call them. Listen to the theme song for the movie and you may understand.

03 - Phlokker "Hot-Chaud-Caldo" HorSpielMusik 48 [A Night At The Pussy Galore Volume 2 / 2005]
Phlokker AKA Quick & Smart AKA Volker Wiegand = The Man. If you don't own any of his records you should be publicly shamed. His Live-Sets are pure gold as well. I don't know how new this new moniker of Volker's is, but I do believe it's the first track he's released under it. I've heard 3-4 others and it's all in the same vein, maybe even a bit more loungey. Great listens that also make your toes tap right through your socks.

04 - Beckett & Taylor "Hand On The Plow (Caro Mix)" Hand On The Plow 03 [(Hired New Hands) / 2006]
This is my first Hand On The plow record and by the sounds of it not my last. I'm glad I caught on early in their release schedule. That means I didn't miss out on much. This track is pure BOMB. It makes me squeal in delight like a little sissy boy. I recall some fist pumping in full effect last time I played it out too. The other two track on this EP aren't quit so in your face, but they definitely have the edge it takes to keep the record in a bag for more than a few weeks.

05 - Subhead "Weirdly Whistling (In The Park)" Subhead 01 [Weirdly Whistling / 1996]
Subhead say what? It took me a few years to even discover what this record was. I ended up with a promo of it from an ebay auctions years ago. It wasn't until a long time later that someone id'd it for me. Now I know. Great tune, this one is. I first heard it played by a New York Dj by the name of JaeSun and still wonder why I've not heard it elsewhere.

06 - Julia Decay "Your Eyes Only" Scandinavia NYC 04 [Invent Your Traditions / 1997]
Cristian Vogel's Ep on Scandinavia...I believe there is some back story to this one. To get the dirt though you'll have to head over to Neil Landstrumm's historical archive of all things Scandinavia.

07 - Marco Carola "Transmissions" Question 10 [Question 10 / 2002]
this is probably the worst of all the Questions. There are some downright Quo Vadis inspired gems on the label, but this LP doesn't have any of them. This one track does seem to get itself played now and then though. Not quite sure why I like it and I think I'll keep it that way. Too much thought about music distracts you from the actual music I think.

08 - Hardfloor "Bodymove" !K7 68 [Jack The Box LP / 1998]
Mid 90's Toronto raves with Terry Mullan flashing before my eyes. Old Hardfloor. Does it get any better? This is acid. Not that crap coming out now. Some raw kit, bleeps and vox. All you need.

09 - Adam X "Retrospection" Sonic Groove 9815 [Reverse Forward / 1998]
I think I got someone to ID a song on this record for me. Cut from an old Neil Landstrumm Dj Set no doubt. The track I had ID'd ended up not being the best on the record by far.

10 - Kikoman "Hemispheric" Rhumba Muzik 02 [R2 / 2002]
I met this Marvin character online once, he seemed to know a lot about the same music I liked and then he mentioned he was just starting a new label...Marvin turned out to be Kikoman I ended up grabbing all his new Rhumba's from him and he was kind enough to fill in the few release I didn't have from the Contact and Deepfried days. Word Brother! Updated sound and better production. Still..nothing quite beats those old Contact records!

11 - Stewart Walker "Nailbiting Conclusion" Tresor 212 [Tresor Compilation Volume 12: Illumination / 2004]
Nothing really pops into my mind with regards to this track. Maybe I haven't had it long enough to build any warm and fuzzy memories with it. Mmmmm warm.

12 - Dynamix II "Sedona" Monotone 03 [Pledge Your Allegiance To Electro Funk / 2002]
Classic track...this one got some play because a certain guy I know apparently really likes it and I just found out. So I tossed it into the mix. The name of the track really irritates me. it ALWAYS make me think of the song "My Sharona"...Kinks? The Knack? I forget...Myyyyy Sedona!

13 - COD "In The Bottle" Golden Dance Classics [Club Classics 17 / 2001]
Some rapid fire kicks, snares and 80's synth stabs. Did I forget the zaps? Probably. Fun little number retrieved with the aid of the way back machine. I just recently found this on a compilation. I can at least play it for others now instead of snapping my fingers to it while I listen to the mp3 on my iRiver. "Hey man, wanna sahre my earbuds?" doesn't fly with many people.

14 - Denard Henry "Crosswalk" Cipher 06 [Daywalkers Volume 1 / 2000]
Denard. When I found out about this guy I dug up almost everything he;d done and bought it. Going back thorugh it I'm not quite sure why now. Some of it didn't age so well. Boring? Yeah a little bit, I remember liking it's infectious nature. He had some pretty cool beats they just didn't really change up much. This was the last record of his I bought. he still doing anything? Maybe it's time to look back into him.

15 - Dj Dexter "B.T.F.W. (Paul Langley Jack Mix)" Pro-Jex 11 [B.T.F.W. Remixes / 1999]
So cheese, so bad. Yet I've played this retarded record so many damn times. It's like rubbernecking at the scene of an accident. You just can't help it! Bang Them Fucking Walls!!!

16 - Adrian Forciniti "Untitled" Syra 03 [Syramerica! / 2006]
One of the VERY few good acid records that has come out lately. I've got some of Adrian's older stuff, but it's mostly jerkin and jackin drum tracks. This Ep is a big step up for him. I highly recommend!

17 - Qwerty "Concrete Acid (303 Mix)" Rotten Row 04 [Concrete Acid / 2006]
This track and the flipside come and go on me. Some days I love them and some days I just toss it down. It is a good record, I'm just being fickle or something. Probably some correlation between my aching foot arches and my like for this record. The Flipside actually has some 303 work by Ed DMX I think...I could pick up the record and check. Just as easily as you could click the discog's link :D/>
